Estimation of Tidal Volume during Exercise Stress Test from Wearable-Device Measures of Heart Rate and Breathing Rate

Tidal volume (TV), defined as the amount of air that moves in or out lungs with each respiratory cycle, is important evaluating function. Although TV can be reliably measured laboratory settings, this information hardly obtainable under everyday living conditions. Under such conditions, wearable devices could provide valuable support to monitor vital signs, heart rate (HR) and breathing (BR). The aim study was develop a model estimate from wearable-device measures HR BR during exercise. were acquired through Zephyr Bioharness 3.0 device nine subjects performing incremental cycling tests. For subject, exercise obtained metabolic cart (Cosmed). A stepwise regression algorithm used create using possible predictors HR, BR, age, body mass index; then validated leave-one-subject-out cross-validation procedure. performance evaluated explained variance (R2), obtaining values ranging 0.65 0.72. proposed valid method for estimation considered not subject-specific instrumentation-specific.
